All the Grandmothers were once girls
-
This quilt honours both the history and continuing relationships between four generations of women. The client provided clothing which was deeply sentimental and had been stored away for many, many years. The clothing was from her grandmother, mother, sister, herself as a young girl, items from key moments in her life, and lastly, baby clothes from her own three daughters. Piecing together the relationships between these women, through their clothing, was a deeply meaningful and moving process. Solid, muted colours were brought in to create visual cohesion between the many and varied fabrics provided. The quilt design chosen was a reference to the interconnected network between each family member, the grid-like pattern being reminiscent of a family tree.
